NHVR Launches Extensive 12-Week Truck Inspection Campaign

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is set to embark on a comprehensive series of random mechanical inspections across Australia, targeting thousands of trucks, buses, and special purpose vehicles. This initiative is part of the NHVR’s 2024 National Roadworthiness Survey (NRS), with inspection sites springing up nationwide from July for a 12-week period.

These inspections, averaging 45 minutes each, will encompass detailed visual checks and mechanical testing based on the National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Manual. The NHVR aims to gather a snapshot of the mechanical condition of Australia’s heavy vehicle fleet to create a consistent national inspection policy. Notably, inspections will be random, ensuring no specific operators or industries are unfairly targeted.

Despite efforts to minimise disruption, truck drivers should account for inspection time within their work diaries and adhere to fatigue management rules. The NHVR’s data collection is crucial, aiming to inform policies that mitigate the social, environmental, and economic impacts of unroadworthy vehicles. A comprehensive report of the survey findings will be available in early 2025, reflecting the condition of Australia’s heavy vehicle fleet and guiding future regulatory measures.
