When Should I Use Plywood On Loads?

Plywood is a great sustainable way of protecting palletised goods and ensuring secure transportation with minimal movement.

Plywood is often utilised between layers when double stacking pallets on full loads (FTL) as it protects the lower layer goods from the harsh pallets above ensuring your clients goods are delivered in good condition.

Another way plywood is used is between rows of pallets down the trailer as it helps prevent load movement and makes for easier loading and unloading as pallet wrapping cannot stick to each other.

Plywood should not be used when carting raw food products such as bulk bags of wheat etc. as any small splinters in the product can cause the risk of a rejected load.

When carting raw food products in bulk bags etc., it is recommended to use corflute as there is no risk of it leaving debris in your load. However, it is not as strong as plywood.

What is the right thickness of plywood to use on our trailers?

There is no correct thickness is every load is so varying in shape, size and requirements. However, you must make a compromise between strength versus weight, as, for example, 18 sheets of ply weighing in at 10kg each adds another 180kg to a b-double set. (based on using 7mm ply)

After undertaking extensive research Tegral has found 7mm plywood to be the most competitive and balanced in the way of weight over strength. 7mm ply is most commonly used in industry and is cost effective for fleets.
