VTA Criticises Deferral of Melbourne’s Western Freight Hub

The Victorian Transport Association (VTA) has voiced strong concerns over the state government’s decision to postpone the development of the Western Interstate Freight Terminal (WIFT) in Truganina, prioritising the Beveridge Intermodal Freight Terminal instead. VTA CEO Peter Anderson criticised this move, highlighting that it would lead to increased truck traffic and decreased productivity. Anderson argued that the WIFT would have offered faster returns, shorter travel distances, and greater efficiency, reducing the number of truck kilometers on the roads.

Victoria’s freight strategy acknowledges the need for both the Truganina and Beveridge hubs to handle double-stacked trains along the Inland Rail corridor. Anderson pointed out that Truganina’s proximity to major customers in the west, particularly in Laverton and Truganina, makes it a more strategic location. The deferral means freight will now have to travel an additional 25 kilometers from Beveridge, adding 400 to 800 extra trucks on the M80 freeway daily, increasing safety concerns. Despite the state government’s assurances of future development, the delay marks a significant shift from their previous commitment to prioritise the Truganina hub.
