Fatality Free Friday: NHVR’s Commitment to Road Safety Awareness

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is once again championing the Fatality Free Friday initiative, reinforcing the importance of road safety for all Australian road users. In 2023 alone, 1,270 lives were lost in road accidents, highlighting the pressing need for initiatives like this. NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto emphasises that every road user, whether driving a truck, bus, motorcycle, or car, has a role to play in ensuring safety on the roads. Petroccitto advises drivers to stay well-rested, focused, and free from distractions while maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles.

Veteran truck driver and safety advocate Rod Hannifey, who has driven over six million kilometers, echoes this sentiment, urging drivers to consider the safety of others on the road. Hannifey’s advice is to treat every vehicle as if a loved one were inside, reducing the likelihood of risky behavior. By fostering a culture of caution and respect, initiatives like Fatality Free Friday aim to create long-term changes in community behavior, ultimately reducing road trauma and saving lives.
