Coil racks are a type of load restraint device for horizontally transported Coils. This devices play the role of elevating the coil from the bed of the truck while providing a stable base for the tremendous weight.
Transporting steel coils is a different story, since it necessitates precise packing, stowage, and lashing processes. They are enormous, yet their contact area is substantially less than that of a square cargo of the same weight.
Transport coil racks are used to handle steel coils on a flatbed or similar platform trailer. Coils are stocked by Tegral in 610mm, 710mm, & 810mm (measured between the uprights). The coil rack does not secure the coil to the trailer; it is done by the chains and chain angles. Rubber mats are also employed at numerous spots to provide friction, which aids in the prevention of things moving, such as the coil racks. Coil racks are only used when loading a coil in the horizontal position.
According to BlueScope, coil Racks must satisfy the following criteria:
- Steel thickness is to be a minimum of 6 mm for the preferred rack and 12 mm for the nonpreferred type. Recommended width is 75 mm.
- The top of the coil rack must not extend above the timber (i.e. height less than 100 mm).
- Racks must have high friction anti-slip material underneath (minimum 3 mm thick), NOT conveyor belting.
- Racks are unacceptable and not suitable for use when the anti-slip material is worn or missing at the ends or the rack is visibly bent.
