Let’s dive into some of the best ways to restrain Rolls, Reels, Coils and Drums i.e. ‘cylinders’.
- You can transport cylinders horizontally or vertically, depending on the height and width of the load. However:
- Transport cylinders that have a length less than their diameter vertically to prevent them from toppling.
- Transport cylinders that have a length greater than their diameter either supported by suitably engineered vehicle structures or laid horizontally to prevent them from tipping
2. Do not use curtains or tarps as the only form of restraint as this will not be sufficient.
3. Transport rolls and reels on specially equipped vehicles or in containers where possible. If they are large, restrain them individually using chocks, cradles or A-frames as a form of direct or tie-down restraint.
4. Restrain small rolls and reels against each other in pairs or groups of three. Use two restraints against forward movement for groups of three.
5. Prevent damage to product and lashings by placing angled-edge corner protectors or specially fabricated core inserts between the lashings and the item. These can also prevent lashings from slipping.
6. You can transport tall cylinders vertically if blocked against a suitably engineered headboard (or similar) or adequately supported by surrounding product.
