Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs), commonly referred to as bulk bags, are available in several types tailored to meet different handling requirements. Here’s an overview of the four primary types and the options available for bag liners:
Type A FIBCs
Type A bags are made from plain woven polypropylene, making them non-conductive. However, their lack of conductivity can pose a risk when powdered materials shift or rub against the bag during filling or discharge—potentially igniting static discharges. Because of this, Type A bags are unsuitable for transporting combustible materials or operating in environments where flammable gases are present.
Type B FIBCs
Much like Type A, Type B bags are crafted from plain-woven polypropylene and are non-conductive. They are designed to minimize propagating brush discharges, but they still carry some risk. Workers might experience mild shocks that could lead to accidents, and the bag’s surface may attract contaminants that interfere with proper emptying. For these reasons, Type B bags should not be used with flammable solvents or gases.
Type C FIBCs
Type C bags are engineered for safer handling of flammable powders. They are constructed from non-conductive polypropylene fabric interwoven with conductive threads arranged in a grid. These threads must be interconnected and properly grounded during both filling and emptying. When these guidelines are followed, Type C bags are effective in environments that include flammable gases, dust, or vapors.
Type D FIBCs
Type D bags take a slightly different approach by incorporating quasi-conductive threads that dissipate static electricity through low-energy corona discharge. Unlike Type C, the threads in Type D bags do not require interconnection or grounding, thereby reducing the chance of human error. This design makes them a suitable alternative for transporting flammable powders even in challenging atmospheres. It is, however, important to ensure that the bags remain free of contaminants like grease, which can impair their ability to safely discharge static electricity.
Bulk Bag Liners
To further reduce the risk of electrostatic discharge, bulk bag liners are available in three varieties:
- L1 (Conductive)
- L2 (Static Dissipative)
- L3 (Insulating)
The selection of a liner depends on both the nature of the material being transported and the specific environmental conditions. Conducting a thorough risk assessment will help determine the optimal liner choice for your application.
By understanding these distinctions, you can choose the most appropriate FIBC and liner combinations for safe and efficient material handling, especially when dealing with flammable or static-sensitive substances.
