The Intermodal Terminal Company (ITC) and Southern Shorthaul Railroad (SSR) have officially partnered to bring efficient haulage services to the upcoming Somerton Intermodal Terminal, set to open in Melbourne’s north by late 2025. This $400 million facility, located 22.5 kilometres from the Port of Melbourne, is designed to reshape freight movement across the region. Covering 45 hectares, it includes nine rail sidings and over 30 hectares of hardstands, optimising both interstate and port freight operations.
The terminal’s projected initial capacity is around one million 20-foot equivalent units annually. Supported by $1 billion in private investment, this development not only strengthens Melbourne’s logistics infrastructure but also underscores the sustainability-focused future of Australia’s freight industry.
