WA’s Rail Freight Strategy Takes Major Step Forward with Kenwick Terminal

The newly completed Kenwick Intermodal Freight Terminal marks a significant milestone in Western Australia’s push to move more freight by rail. Announced by WA Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, this $25 million project, funded in part by federal and state governments, aims to reduce the state’s reliance on road transport. The terminal will play a key role in WA’s plan to increase rail freight from 20% to 30%.

Saffioti highlighted the importance of this development, noting that the terminal will remove thousands of truck movements from roads, particularly the busy Roe Highway. This will lead to reduced congestion, safer roads, and lower emissions. Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King also praised the initiative, calling it a “game-changer” for freight movement across WA and beyond.

The Kenwick terminal’s strategic importance extends to the future Westport project, enhancing WA’s economic growth and sustainability by shifting more freight from trucks to rail, benefiting the environment and local communities.
