Gympie Bypass Set to Open in October, Marking End of 15-Year Highway Upgrade

The long-awaited Gympie Bypass is set to open in October 2024, marking the completion of a 15-year, $2.549 billion project to upgrade the Bruce Highway between Cooroy and Curra. This 26-kilometre, four-lane highway will improve safety, flood resilience, and capacity for motorists traveling through the Gympie region. Federal Assistant Minister for Regional Development Anthony Chisholm highlighted the significance of this milestone, noting that it future-proofs Queensland’s transport and road freight industry.

The construction of the bypass has been a massive endeavour, involving the building of 42 bridges, moving over 6 million cubic metres of earth, and laying 142 kilometres of pavement. Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish expressed excitement as the project nears its finish line, with final works underway. The community recently celebrated this milestone, with over 3000 people walking a section of the new highway at the Flood Road interchange.
